There are few, if any, topics concerning Christian ministry that cause as much confusion as the topic of “deliverance” as it relates to the Christian. Some ministries endorse the idea that a Christian can be demon possessed, and others proclaim that a true born-again Christian is subject to demonic oppression but not full-blown possession. Deliverance ministries are often not scripturally sound, and their teachings can come from either a perverse view of the scriptures or a collection of personal accounts and experiences. Deliverance ministries often attract the mentally ill, both the ministers and those who come to them for help. Yes, spiritual warfare is real; however, God has given us clear and sound teaching in his word on how to fight our spiritual enemies. But the first thing that the believer must learn is what it means to be a Christian.
Believe it or not, Satan is limited in what he can do to the child of God. Christians have been spiritually removed from Satan’s kingdom and are now citizens of heaven. The child of God has been given a new spirit. Christians are not only indwelt by God’s Spirit, but the Holy Spirit is united with the Christian’s spirit. The believer has angels that God sends to help them. And Christians have authority over Satan and his kingdom. Yes, Satan is a problem, but perverse and false teaching on spiritual warfare is a much bigger issue.
Below you will find a teaching outline that I will be using for part of a class called Evangelism & Spiritual Warfare. It goes over the origin of mankind, mankind’s fall, the state of the fallen, and what happens when a person is brough into God’s family. All of the quoted scriptures are taken from the New King James Version unless noted otherwise.
Evangelism and Spiritual Warfare Orientation Lesson
A. What Happened
Man created without sin
Genesis 1: 26 – Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Genesis 1: 31– Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
Man was corrupted by sin
Romans 5:12-14 – 12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13 (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
Genesis 3:1-7 – 1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.
All of mankind, proceeding from Adam, is born corrupted by sin
1 Corinthians 15:21-22 – 21For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.
B. From Birth man is
Under God’s wrath
John 3:36 – 36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
A part of Satan’s kingdom
1 John 5:19 – 19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.
Spiritually dead
Ephesians 2:1-3 – 1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
C. How we are saved
Chosen by God
Ephesians 1:3-6 – 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.
Called by God
John 6:44 – 44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:65 – 65 And He said, “Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.”
John 10:25-30 – 25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me. 26 But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you. 27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. 30 I and My Father are one.”
Saved by God
Ephesians 2:8-9 – 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Titus 3:4-7– 4 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Confession of faith – Romans 10:8-10 – 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
D. What happens when we are saved
Given a new spirit
Ezekiel 36:26-27 – 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
1 Peter 1:23 – 23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,
Ephesians 4:23-24 – 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
2 Corinthians 5:17 – 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Our spirit is united with God’s Spirit
1 Corinthians 6:17 – 17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.
Romans 8:9-11 – 9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
Ephesians 1:13-14 – 13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
Yeshua’s righteousness imputed to us
Philippians 3:9 – 9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;
2 Corinthians 5:20-21 – 20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. 21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Romans 5:19 – 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.
Our sins are forgiven
1 Peter 2:24 – 24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
Colossians 2:13-15 – 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.
Taken out of Satan’s kingdom and placed into God’s kingdom
Colossians 1:12-14 – 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
Philippians 3:20 – 20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
Given angelic ministers
Hebrews 1:14 – 14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation? (Amplified – Are not all the angels ministering spirits sent out [by God] to serve (accompany, protect) those who will inherit salvation? [Of course they are!])
Given authority over the Enemy
Luke 10:17-20 – 17 Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”18 And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
Given the right to act as the agents of Yeshua
John 14:12-14 – 12“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
Given spiritual weapons
2 Corinthians 10:3-6 – 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.
Given spiritual gifts
1 Corinthians 12:1-11 – 1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: 2 You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. 4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
